"Big Tabacco," "Big Food"???

Times are a changing.

I read an excellent editorial (check it out!) today that compared "Big Tabacco" to "Big Food." Politically, I'm against the government regulating everything we can and can't do. So I think the government should stay out of imposing more regulations, even for food. However, I think people, when presented with the information, will choose for themselves, to stop eating this food and supporting these industries. The power lies in the individual, making individual choices.

Check out the trailer for the new movie that Ellen Goodman is referring to in her article:

Official Food, Inc. Movie Site - Hungry For Change?

And I'd love to hear your thoughts regarding this.

  1. Have you seen Food Inc. yet? I saw it a month ago and LOVED it. I can't wait to buy it when it comes out on DVD.

What is sad about that article is the fact that everyone has taken her article and made it out to be her wanting free healthcare, her wanting abortion, her being a liberal. WHATEVER! This is what bugs me the most about super Conservative Mormons. It's like everything that hints at change or different from their norm is liberal, wrong, should be discarded, etc.

Put this article in DC or NYC or any other big city and you would have a variety of opinions... which wouldn't all sound like accusations from the far Right.

  3. I am so bummed. I love Michael Pollan's book "In Defense of Food" and intend to read "The Omnivore's Dilemma" next, so I am excited that he is a huge voice in the film. Unfortunately I don't want to drive all the way to SLC and it's out of the Loft in Tucson, before I get there, so... hoepfulyl it'll be out on video soon.

  4. http://cnettv.cnet.com/truth-about-food-inc/9742-1_53-50073034.html

This website has a link to an interview with Robert Kenner and Michael Pollan. I loved that Robert Kenner said that he thinks that mothers who are feeding their children are going to be the most powerful source in promoting change. (Not exact words, but basically that's what he said.)

  5. This is not a solo opinion. Did you know that King County, WA, requires that food establishments list the calories for each food item on their menu? http://www.pnwlocalnews.com/south_king/fwm/lifestyle/38433439.html
And in some areas, they have banned transfats (NY, for certain, but WA was working on it too...) http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2003782279_transfat10m.html
So, it is not far out there thinking in this editorial.

  6. I totally agree with you, Abbie! I chalk it up to hyper poloarization of our political spheres... I must have missed the memo that equated tofu eaters with being a bleeding heart liberal. Whole foods eating is not conservative or liberal... it just that "whole foods eating".
