White Bread & Pasta

This is not a post to rant the evils of white bread. Rather, I want to let you know why I've been gone from my regular posting.

I have a confession to make. I've been eating atrociously. I mean, my old self is looking at my new self, in shock and horror at the foods that I've been eating--plain white bagels, tortilla chips, pasta, and not an ounce of veggies, except for tomatoes and iceberg lettuce, for weeks!

There is an explanation for all of this.

I am pregnant.

Somehow, as soon as the intense nausea and sleepiness (have I mentioned I can and do sleep 12 hours + a day?) set in (a.k.a. morning sickness, which please, can we find another name for this condition which is not limited to only the morning?), my very clean diet of whole foods did a complete 180. All I care about now is eating whatever I can manage to stomach, which is usually something white, starchy, and completely void of nutrients (does this make any sense at all?).

No. I haven't thrown up yet. Yes. I am very nauseated. VERY nauseated. Pretty much all of the time. And for those theories floating out there that morning sickness can be eased or eliminated with ginger, certain foods, or is caused by a poor diet, to that I say, hogwash. This is my fourth time around the pregnancy block, and I have to say I prior to getting pregnant this time around my diet could not have been made healthier. Seriously. I'm not bragging, just saying, there's this misconception that the perfect diet can eliminate morning sickness. It's just not true. I hate ginger. Especially ginger tea. It makes me want to throw up.

I have to say, I have been a lot more lenient with my food choices than with my last pregnancy when I wasn't nearly as overcome with morning sickness. This time around, I've had very strong cravings and aversions to food. While I'm committed to eating vegetarian during the whole pregnancy, I can't say I've been totally vegan. This may come as shock (perhaps disappointment to some?) as if you know me, I'm totally committed to the benefits of plant-based vegan diet. However, I've always felt that if my body were telling me I needed a particular food or if I felt I was "missing" something, I would eat fish or eggs or whatever. So since being pregnant the only craving for animal foods has been for eggs which I have, for the past few days been eating, without a shred of guilt. It's interesting to note, I was reading in this month's Fit Pregnancy magazine about how cholesterol levels need to be higher in pregnant women due to the increase in certain hormones needed for a healthy pregnancy. It makes sense to me that with my prior diet, my cholesterol had to be very low (which under non-pregnant circumstances is a good thing), so if this bit about higher cholesterol during pregnancy holds true, it would make sense that I'm craving things like eggs, which are a rich source of cholesterol.

The other thing that has changed dramatically is my eating schedule. For some reason, I can eat in the morning but as the day goes on, it becomes much harder to eat. So usually I'll eat a substantial breakfast, little or no lunch, and a small dinner or nothing at all. And I usually can't snack. After about 9 or 10 am, food becomes completely repulsive.

So don't worry if you don't hear from me for awhile. I'm around, just busy making a baby.

  2. congrats! Do you read the blog heathereatsalmondbutter? She is also pregnant, although farther along than you and her story was exactly the same! She talked a lot about changing her food rules and her ability to only eat in the morning.

  3. Congrats on baby number 4!!! My number 4 has been my best (but they have all been really good, the same with you, so no worries!)
I totally understand what you are saying about eating what your body needs. My last two pregnancies, I really listened to my body and when I had a craving, tried really hard to choose the healthy choice of that craving. But sometimes, there is nothing better then a Slurpee on a hot day! LOL!
Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy!

  5. Congratulations! This is terrific news! It's not at all comforting, however, that the perfect diet won't eliminate morning sickness. Sigh. The things you ladies have to go through...

relax--take it easy on yourself...you can catch up on healthy food in the next trimester

    enjoy!!

  7. Can I tell you that I am relieved to hear this? I feel like I am constantly craving eggs. And creamy things. I can't wait to get back to a healthy diet (just two more months!), but in the meantime, it's nice to know that being averse to vegetables is not necessarily sinful. Right now. :)

  8. Oh. And CONGRATULATIONS!! You are wonder woman with your children. I have no idea how you do it. I need lessons.

  9. Congrats! I had the same issue :) One thing that helped tremendously was dandelion root capsules. They help support the liver which is dealing with the huge increase of hormones you are having and causing a lot of the nausea. Just an idea!

  10. I feel for ya. I had intense morning sickness with all my babies and ate whatever I could stomach that day. Egg sandwiches were one of my faves. Lemonade and even milkshakes(I typically detest dairy) were about all I could drink. Ginger totally grossed me out...I still can't drink ginger ale because of the association. Congrats!!!

  11. Congratulations!! I'm so happy for you (the baby part not the sick part). I have to tell you, it made me feel so much better reading your post because I am due in August with my second, and I too fell off the vegan wagon when I started with the nausea. It was horrible this time and I ate whatever sounded good to me which included alot of dairy and not so many whole foods. Just the past couple of months I have gone back to stricter vegan eating because I am starting to feel normal again.
I say whatever you can keep down, go for it. It's only temporary and you can make up for it later:)
Sending up prayers for you - I know how miserable it is!!

  12. Congratulations! I hope your morning (all day) sickness passes soon. Both times I have been pregnant I think I will never get pregnant again while I am going through the sick part. You just eat what you can to get through. Good luck with everything!

  13. Congratulations! I hope you start to feel better soon. I am glad that you are able to give your body what it needs without guilt--that is so important. I look forward to reading as you move forward with your (mostly) vegan pregnancy.
