No seaweed or fish here!
This kid friendly sushi, made from bananas, 100% fruit roll ups,
coated with unsweetened shredded coconut,
and drizzled with strawberry agave syrup is super easy to make and is perfect for your next party or get together. Mali helped me make these yesterday afternoon, and was even successfully (briefly) with maneuvering the chopsticks! My kids like helping to make these as much as they do eating them.
Here's what you need:
It's okay if the bananas break. You can put two halves in one roll up.
GF, SF
Here's what you need:
- 4 All-fruit, fruit roll-ups (I used General Mills, Simply Fruit brand
- 2-3 bananas (depending on how big your bananas are)
- 1/4 c. shredded, unsweetened coconut
- 1/4 c. strawberry agave syrup
First, cut banana tops (if you're doing it with a little one, let them do it, with your supervision, it's a great way for them to learn and feel important!). The best bananas to use are ones that have a few brown spots on them (so they are sweeter), but are still firm. Don't use mushy or hard bananas.
Peel skins. It's okay if the bananas break. You can put two halves in one roll up.
Peel plastic from roll-up. Be careful not to tear the roll up, you want a full sheet, but if you tear a little, it's okay, you can fix it when you wrap it around the banana.
If you want, get your favorite non-dairy yogurt for dipping. We used this:
Place rolls on plate, and drizzle with strawberry agave syrup. Fancy.
Eat with chopsticks and dip in yogurt. Enjoy!
Question of the Post:
Are you a fan of sushi? If so, have you ever made sushi?
Before I went vegan I used to make a similar dessert sushi, only with less healthy things like candy. I haven't made any since the transition. Might have to give this one a try.
ReplyDeleteSo cute! I used to make sushi sometimes. Now i just eat rice with rice vinegar, and eat the nori separate because I'm too lazy to roll it! hehe. This is inspiring me though....

My sister and I make veggie sushi often. LOVE IT! These look great - something even my picky 4 year old might like :D
ReplyDeleteSushi is my favorite food of ALL TIME. honestly, I'll eat fish for some good quality sushi! Ahh, so delicious.
ReplyDeleteThere are seriously "healthy" fruit roll-ups out there?? Cool. My mom mentioned that she was making frui-shis with my nephews but I didn't think much of trying it because I figured the fruit roll-ups would have junk in them. I'll have to check into that...
ReplyDeleteI love California Rolls...do those count?
Sooooo I'm curious. Fruit roll-ups, fruit buddies, agave syrup, maple syrup, soy yogurt, individually wrapped carrots all of which have been featured in recent posts....what is your typical monthly grocery budget?? Am I just shopping at the wrong place or is my 500$/month grocery budget just not realistic? I have 4 kids too close in age to yours and I absolutely cannot afford individually wrapped fancy kid-friendly stuff or fancy things like real maple syrup. How have u done it for the past years in which your husband was in law school an u earned a modest income. I'd really like some encouragement in this area.
ReplyDeleteRachel K: great question! These packaged foods, while have been showcased of late are by no means a great deal of what we eat. Most of our daily fare is rice, oatmeal, potatoes (all bought in bulk for very cheap), and legumes of various sorts.
ReplyDeleteMy biggest "secret" (please don't hate me)--I price match at Wal-mart. Sometimes I spend as little as $20 on a weeks worth of produce. For example, at a competing store they are selling cucumbers 7 for $1 (I'm not joking), and Walmart will match that price. So I get 21 (!) cucumbers for $3, and that week we eat a LOT of cucumbers (and other things of course). I rarely ever buy produce that is not super on sale, leaving me extra money for "splurge" items.
Hope that helps.
Also, regarding food budgets:
ReplyDeleteI shop at both Costco & Sam's Club, in addition to Winco and buy in bulk. I use coupons and instant rebates at Costco, which really help. We eat whatever is on sale that week or month. This is why I'm not a "locavore" or 100% organic (but Costco does carry many organic produce items which I often take advantage of). I certainly couldn't afford to do that at this point in our lives!
I have my shopping down to a science. I could tell you down to the price where I can buy a certain item for the best price. Of course my list isn't relevant for anyone who doesn't live where I do, but point is, you can figure out how to make it work for you too!
Those are adorable. They are fun for kids, but I think they'd also be a fun addition to an appetizer/dessert type party for grownups.
ReplyDeleteI saw those "whole fruit" Fruit Roll Ups at Costco last week -- now I have a great idea what I could do with them! I do like the "dessert" idea.
ReplyDeleteso fun! i think this would be a great snack to make with my preschool class. :)
ReplyDeleteThese are adorable. I saw a similar (but not healthy) version of fruit sushi in The Friend magazine a few months ago. Maybe I'll actually try it now!
