Like Brad & Angelina are finally going to tie the knot. Kanye loves Kim.
And in veg/health celebrity news,
Carrie Underwood went vegan after being vegetarian for awhile (oh right, I know that is so last year).
Ellen De Generes is vegan (apparently she has been, for like, several years).
Miley Cyrus has now gone gluten-free (wup-dee-doo).
Alicia Silverstone did some weird mouth to mouth feeding as part of weaning her baby & the video went viral (Joseph, of all people, told me about that one).
Truth be told, I don't actually care much about celebs or their lives. But one celebrity that piques my interest is Jennifer Lawrence.

Have you seen it? Or read the books?
(I read the first one, and am 30 pages away from finishing the second.)
I'm a sucker for a good, depressing story (some of my faves include An American Tragedy & Tess of the D'urbervilles), and this one does not disappoint!
Hunger Games features a dark, dystopian world where there's little hope, little food, & one heroine:
Katniss Everdeen (aka Jennifer Lawrence).

While I'm not going to get into the details of the book/movie here, let's just say she's got some girl power & her bow & arrow skills are impressive.
What really impresses me though, is that she's real. Real in a, I'm-not-just-another-starving-diva-showing-off-my-cleavage sort of way, which is a rarity in Hollywood these days.
I loved watching her on screen, not just because she's a talented actor and drop-dead gorgeous in an earthy, organic way, but also because I felt like I could relate to her.
She's got curves! She's athletic (not "big-boned," ekk, I hate this term, it's so disingenuous). She's strong!
But despite this, she's gotten a lot of flack for being "too fat."
Do you think she's too fat?

We've got major problems if we think this gorgeous, fit gal is fat, don't ya think?

As for me, who cares about what kind of cake will be served at Brangelina's wedding (I do hope it's vegan & gluten free), or who's the latest schmuck to fall for what's her name, that Kardashian girl?, I want to see real women, like Jennifer, have the courage to speak out for being real, healthy, & beautiful. Don't you?
****
Have seen the movie or read the book?
What do you think of Jennifer Lawrence?
Janae, I completely agree with you! That was one thing I loved about having her in the movie was she was a normal woman with curves. It actually didn't quite fit with the story since she was supposed to lack food so much of the time, but I didn't care. lol. I like that girls will get to see a real, healthy-looking woman. I know magazine photos often get photoshopped, so I won't comment on them, but she did not look fat in the movie. (I'll also say I think she looks better with hair colour closer to her natural colour! :P )
ReplyDeleteD: Yes, that's true, the stick-thin Hollywood type would have actually made sense seeing as it is the "hunger" games. But, like you, I didn't care a bit. AND, I think since so many teenage girls are watching this movie & look up to her, it's awesome she's healthy & curvaceous!
ReplyDeleteI just finished re-reading the series, and I absolutely LOVE them. Some people have a hard time with the 3rd book and/or ending, but I love it. Havent seen the film yet, waiting to see the "fake" one (lol dollar theater :))
ReplyDeleteHave read all the books, and have seen the movie. Love Jennifer Lawrence's Katniss. Was absolutely jealous of her curves (aka, anytime they showed her from behind and her tiny waist accentuated her bum).
ReplyDeleteMy co-worker, who also read the books, was one of the skeptics who thought JLawrence was too big to play the character. It wasn't a jab at her personally, just that the character wouldn't be so curvy... having starved for so much of puberty.
Eh... to each their own.
Melissa: Let's remember though, she was eating more food than her peers b/c of her hunting skills...so those curves aren't improbable.
ReplyDeleteTEN: Which book was your fave?

ReplyDeleteI just started reading Hunger Games today. My husband finished it and passed it along to me. I'm hooked!! Looking forward to seeing the movie when I finish the book. I found out Jennifer Lawrence in from Louisville, Kentucky which is my hometown! That sparked my interest in her. Excited to see her in the movie. I had no idea she was getting so much negativity for her weight. That's just crazy!! She's such a cute girl.
ReplyDeleteAhh I think I would actually have to say the first! But the other two are still so good, and completely necessary to get to the great end :) I really do love the ending.
ReplyDeletePlease - don't get me started on the Kardashians - all the fuss everyone makes about them - I.just.don't.get.it!
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to seeing this movie however :) x

I have read the books and saw the movie. I was very impressed with Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss. I was really terrified they were going to pull another Twilight and pick an actress for her looks rather than her acting skills. She displayed fantastic fire and tenacity thatI loved. I was blown away when people called her Fat. I think my mouth actually dropped. She's fit and healthy adn beautiful and, as Katniss, she looked like someone who hunted and had to actually WORK for her food and everyday living. We really are slipping into a sad world if fit is fat. And with so many tweens and teenage girls, I'm glad they picked a fit and healthy real girl for Katniss. Thanks for this post.

I thought Jennifer Lawrence was SO refreshing. She was real, which is more important in a movie like that then worrying if she is stick thin.
ReplyDeleteI have a question for you though. I am really wanting to jump into this whole foods diet, but one of my concerns is dealing with other people. Specifically, eating at other people's homes. What do you do? Also, what do you do when your child is invited to a birthday party or playdate at someone else's home?
I want to be healthy, but I don't want my child to feel different or weird in a negative way, or feel deprived when it comes to food. How do you work around this? I would love to hear your thoughts, and no worries if you want to write a post on it. I'm not in a hurry :)
I'm sorry, all I heard was BARGAIN TUESDAY at the movies! I must go!
ReplyDeleteKristen: So were you neighbors :)?
ReplyDeleteIt's always fun to jump into an "addicting" series, give ya something to look forward to, nothing like some juicy escapist fiction to de-stress.
TEN: You are the 1st person I've heard of that actually likes the ending to the 3rd. I've heard it's not a happy ending. I actually love un-happy endings. Maybe I'm a bit British in that way?
Roseanna: Yes, agree w/ you about Kardashians. Who are they? Who cares? Why are they still around? And why is their mom always posing like she's one of the daughters too? (There's a funny SNL skit about the Kardashians..)
Hannah: I totally agree with you. I think Jennifer raises to the top 1% of young actors. She can hold her own, and I think she does a remarkable job portarying the depth of Katniss's character.
Katie: Jumping into a whole foods diet...there's actually a lot of info-based posts on my blog about that, but until I get my new site (which should be in a couple of weeks!), I understand it's not the most user-friendly. You have a lot of great questions & I would love to include some of them in upcoming posts, thank you for asking!
Stephanie: Yes, the Wynsong theatre. It's a steal, & whenever we go, there is nobody there. Often we have the whole theater to ourselves :)!
